Cauliflower Steak Recipe With Spicy Mango Salsa

mains & sides recipes Jun 04, 2018

I was inspired to share this recipe given all the fresh mango's I've been picking up at the market.  Mango appears to be in season (somewhere in the world) and we've been enjoying them in abundance in Toronto! I love cauliflower and my sister has been encouraging me to share a cauliflower steak recipe. So I took my sisters suggestion and married it with a mango salsa and prepared this simple recipe to share with y'all. This is my first cauliflower steak recipe, but if you don't like cauliflower you can easily pair this salsa with a cabbage steak, check out the recipe I shared earlier for a yummy cabbage steak.

I've shown how you can prepare the recipe on a grill as well as roasting it in the oven.  I encourage you to try making it both ways and let me know your preference in the comments below!

Cauliflower is rich in phytonutrients, antioxidants and has been studied and has been proven to support cardiovascular health, digestive health, liver detoxification and is found to be immune boosting and anti-inflammatory.        _________________________________________________________________________

My love for cauliflower runs deep as I've enjoyed it since my childhood but I ever really appreciated the nutritional value of cauliflower until I studied nutrition. So before we delve into the recipe instructions I want to highlight some of the nutritional benefits of cauliflower.

Cauliflower is...

Packed with phytonutrients in the form of glucosinolates. These sulfur-containing compounds are well studied and known to provide a variety of health benefits including supporting cardiovascular health, digestive health, immune boosting, anti-inflammatory, and supporting liver detoxification.

Packed with antioxidants including but not limited to beta-carotene, vitamin C, quercetin and manganese—a mineral antioxidant that is especially important in oxygen-related metabolism.

Intake of cauliflower has been analyzed in relationship to a variety of different disease risks. Including colorectal cancer, prostate cancer risk, regulation of blood cholesterol and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk.

So now we're on to the recipe!! The salsa that's paired with the cauliflower is so simple to prepare.  Just chop up all the fruits and veggies, I like to dice mine fairly small, squeeze the lemon or lime juice, sprinkle with sea salt and toss until well combined.  The only thing I'd like to caution is the dicing of the jalapeno which may burn your hands, so I would highly recommend wearing gloves during this process.  This adds a great kick to the salsa so it's an optional ingredient.

Regarding the cauliflower, there's a bit of a trick to slicing it into steaks so I've shared detailed instructions with some pics below.

Prepare the cauliflower by washing it and removing of the outer leaves.  However make sure, you keep the stem in tact, this will ensure the cauliflower doesn't fall apart when you begin to slice the steaks.  This is a critical point!

Place cauliflower on cutting board the stem side down and slice into two halves.

Keep slicing each half into 1/2 inch steaks and place on a baking sheet. There will be some pieces that fall loose, you can keep these to add into salads or grill them alongside the steaks.

Mix all herbs, spices and sea salt into the avocado oil and spread onto each side of the steaks. You have the option of baking this in the oven, preheated to 400 for 30-40 min turning midway or grill on a bbq on medium for 8-10 min on each side.

Serve each cooked steak with a portion of the salsa and enjoy!

I'd love to know how yours turns out so feel free to leave comments below!

xx
