Energizing Chocolate Smoothie
Feb 06, 2016
This smoothie truly lives up to its name! It is packed with energizing nutrients and full of chocolaty goodness! Adding this smoothie to your breakfast rotation is a great way to sweeten up your week while adding anti-inflammatory and nutrient dense food into your diet. Many of us have come to believe that "healthy" has to be bland and boring and that being a healthy individual requires deprivation and needs to become a full time commitment. I was on that bandwagon for a while, but as I've been studying nutrition I've realized that nothing could be farther from the truth. Healthy can actually be delicious! All that's required is a little bit of creativity and a few healthy ingredients. As I experiment to find new and innovative ways of getting varying nutrients into my family, I stumble upon some hits and misses. My poor hubby is my go-to guinea pig, and tastes some winners as well as some losers. After we tried this recipe we both deemed this a definite winner. First for taste and then for nutritional benefits.
At the base of this energizing smoothie are avocados. They provide a rich and creamy texture to the smoothie. Avocados on their own are a superfood as far as I'm concerned. They are rich in essential fatty acids, specifically omega 6 (2500mg per cup); vitamin C (25% DV); folate (30% DV); vitamin K (39% DV) and vitamin E (16%DV). They are also a good source of various minerals including potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper and manganese. Pumpkin seeds are another star ingredient providing a myriad of antioxidants and minerals to your diet. In this recipe you're provided with iron (23% of DV), magnesium (38% of DV), phosphorus (33% of DV), zinc (14% of DV), copper (20% of DV) and manganese (43% of DV).
In addition to all of the above goodness, you'll obtain the antioxidant and uplifting benefits from raw cocoa powder. Raw cocoa provides you with numerous minerals and is a natural mood booster, increasing your natural 'feel good hormones' such as dopamine and serotonin. Just ensure you're using raw cocoa vs processed cocoa, such as 'dutch', which is highly processed and stripped of nutrients. You can obtain raw cocoa from the health food store, Organic Traditions is a good brand to choose.
