Hormone Balancing Hot Cacao

drinks/smoothies recipes Oct 15, 2020

This hot chocolate or hot cacao has been made on repeat in our household as the weather becomes more chilly in Toronto. This is a delicious and extremely healthy alternative to prepackaged hot chocolate drinks. It's teenager approved and a go-to warming drink in our household.

The highlight of this recipe is maca powder. Gelatinized organic white maca is what I like to use.  I choose gelatinized maca as it is better absorbed than traditional maca.  If you're not familiar with maca, it's a cruciferous root vegetable (falls into the family of broccoli, cabbage & kale) and has been traditionally grown and used for 2000 plus years in Peru. It's been traditionally used to treat infertility &  low libido, amongst other imbalances.

I use it daily in mine and my husband's morning smoothie and it helps keep both of or hormones in check. I also recommend it to many of my clients as a preventative measure to helping their hormones remain in balance. In addition to helping both male and female hormones. Maca has also been studied to benefit us in the following ways: Improve energy, improve menopausal symptoms (hot flashes) and reduce the occurrence of osteoporosis. It's not a magical cure-all food, but it can definitely help with overall well-being when included as part of a healthy, veggie-rich, diet!

You'll particularly benefit from this delicious drink if you tend to feel cold or chilly on a regular basis. This drink is very warming and includes cacao powder which is naturally warming and stimulating. So if you have a sensitivity to caffeine or suffer from hot flashes or excessive heat (such as heat rashes, psoriasis, or eczema) then this will be too warming for you. You should instead be drinking something cooling like a matcha latte instead.

Making this drink is simple. Place all the ingredients in a small saucepan and heat until it is warm and to your liking. I like to warm it just until it froths. I personally enjoy this with monk fruit sweetener as it does not impact your blood sugar in any way and has gut health benefits. But you can replace this with your sweetener of choice.
